"A Creative Writing Workshop"

Participants will learn the following:

*The classic "Free Write" exercise will pull up blockage that the students may have towards freely expressing themselves.

*Structure/Form - this exercise will cover meter, Imagery, repetition, language, line, stanza, speaker, symbol, alliteration, rhyme etc... which will offer the participants the ability to give their writing discipline by following the rules of form based poetry.

*Free Verse - this exercise will give participants the opportunity to construct poems without having to conform to the rules of structured poetry. During this section I will go over various free verse techniques.

*Creative Writing: Haikus- Introduces students to the basic Haiku poetry format.

*Newspaper Poems- Participants will be able to appreciate the value of words, review the parts of speech, create original poetry, shape the poem, and write an explanation of the images he/she has created.

*Poetry and Teamwork- In preparation for this teamwork activity, I will start by writing "Teamwork" on the board. This will start the webbing activity to determine prior knowledge. Following the procedure for webbing, I would have the participants tell me all the ideas/words that they can think of that may go along with "teamwork."

*Writing a poem- Creative writing, poetry appreciation, literary techniques.

*How to Read Poetry - A general map or checklist of things to think while analyzing a poem.

*Group poems - this exercise will consist of various group poems that participants will be able to construct as a team. The poems will be generated from topical issues relating to politics and current events.

*Art poems – during this exercise the participants will be given various pieces of art for them to write poems about.
